What is a Julian date?
“Julian date” means two different things:
1. Julian Day Number and Julian Date (astronomy)
A continuous count of days used by astronomers, so that the time between two events is a simple subtraction. Day 0 began at noon Universal Time on January 1, 4713 BC in the Julian calendar (November 24, 4714 BC in the proleptic Gregorian calendar). The scheme goes back to Joseph Scaliger's Julian Period of 1583, a cycle of 7,980 years (28 × 19 × 15). Days start at noon, so a night of observations keeps one date; the fraction gives the time, and 0.5 means midnight UTC. January 1, 2000 at 12:00 is JD 2451545. The Modified Julian Date (MJD = JD − 2,400,000.5) starts at midnight and counts from November 17, 1858.
2. Ordinal dates (YYDDD, YYYYDDD)
In the military, manufacturing and food industries, “Julian date” usually means the day of the year combined with the year: November 5, 2026 is 26309 (YYDDD), 2026309 (YYYYDDD) or 2026-309 in ISO 8601. US egg cartons, for example, show the pack date as a three-digit day of the year, from 001 for January 1 to 365 (or 366) for December 31. Watch for leap years: from March 1 on, the same calendar date has a code one higher.
Neither number has anything to do with the Julian calendar, the calendar of Julius Caesar that the Gregorian calendar replaced. Between March 1, 1900 and February 28, 2100 a Julian calendar date is 13 days behind the Gregorian one, which is why churches that still follow the Julian calendar celebrate Christmas (December 25 in that calendar) on January 7.
