How to use these school calendar templates

  1. Open a school year above. Each page shows August through July, the holidays and typical breaks, weekdays per month and a 180-day example with semesters and quarters.
  2. Print it with the Print button (the 12 months fit on one landscape page) or download the PDF (US Letter, landscape) with the holiday list beside the calendar.
  3. Mark your district's first and last day of school, teacher workdays, early-release days, conferences and testing windows.

Frequently asked questions

Why do school year calendars run from August to July?

Most US public schools start in August or early September and finish in May or June. An August to July layout keeps one whole school year on a single page, with the summer months at the end.

Which holidays do US schools usually close for?

Most districts close for Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and the day after, a winter break around Christmas and New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Memorial Day, and take a spring break. Closures on Columbus Day / Indigenous Peoples' Day, Veterans Day, Presidents' Day and Juneteenth vary by district.

How many days are in a school year?

180 instructional days is the most common state minimum; some states set a minimum number of hours instead. Each school-year page counts the weekdays left after federal holidays, month by month.

Are these official school district calendars?

No. Each district or school board adopts its own calendar. These templates show the fixed national dates (federal holidays, Thanksgiving, Easter) so you can fill in your district's first and last day, breaks and teacher workdays.
