Frequently asked questions
How many bank holidays are there in the UK?
England and Wales normally have 8 bank holidays a year, Scotland 9 and Northern Ireland 10. One-off holidays can add to this, such as Scotland's World Cup bank holiday on 15 June 2026.
What happens when a bank holiday falls on a weekend?
A substitute weekday becomes the bank holiday, usually the following Monday. When Christmas Day and Boxing Day both fall at a weekend, the substitutes are Monday 27 and Tuesday 28 December, as in 2027 and 2032.
Which bank holidays are different in Scotland?
Scotland has 2 January and St Andrew's Day (30 November), no Easter Monday, and its summer bank holiday on the first Monday of August instead of the last.
Do employers have to give bank holidays off?
No. GOV.UK says bank or public holidays do not have to be given as paid leave, and an employer can choose to include bank holidays in a worker's statutory annual leave (5.6 weeks).
