Day of the year vs. Julian date

Day of the year (the ordinal date) counts the days of a year from January 1 = day 1. ISO 8601 writes it as year and day number: 2026-309 is November 5, 2026.

“Julian date” is widely used for the same number, especially in the military, manufacturing and food packaging, where a code such as 26309 (YYDDD) means 2026, day 309. That usage is informal.

In astronomy, a Julian Date is a different number: a continuous count of days since noon UTC on January 1, 4713 BC. November 5, 2026 is Julian Day Number 2461350. Neither meaning has anything to do with the Julian calendar of Julius Caesar. Convert dates with the Julian date converter.

Frequently asked questions

How do I work out the day of the year by hand?

Add the days of all earlier months to the day of the month. In a common year the running totals before each month are: Jan 0, Feb 31, Mar 59, Apr 90, May 120, Jun 151, Jul 181, Aug 212, Sep 243, Oct 273, Nov 304, Dec 334. So July 4 is 181 + 4 = day 185. In a leap year, add 1 for any date from March 1 on.

How do I turn a day number back into a date?

Find the last month whose running total is below the number and subtract it. For day 222 of a common year: July ends on day 212, so day 222 is August 10. In a leap year, subtract one more from March on.

How do I get the day of the year in Excel or Google Sheets?

With a date in cell A1, use =A1-DATE(YEAR(A1),1,0). DATE(year, 1, 0) is December 31 of the previous year, so the difference is the day number. Format the result as a number, not a date.
