History of Labor Day
- September 5, 1882: the first Labor Day was held on a Tuesday in New York City, organized by the Central Labor Union, which held a second one on September 5, 1883.
- 1885–1886: the first municipal ordinances recognized the day.
- February 21, 1887: Oregon became the first state to pass a Labor Day law; Colorado, Massachusetts, New Jersey and New York followed the same year.
- June 28, 1894: by then 23 more states had adopted the holiday. Congress passed an act making the first Monday in September a legal holiday in the District of Columbia and the territories — a holiday for federal employees — and President Grover Cleveland signed it.
Who founded Labor Day?
The question is not settled. Some records credit Peter J. McGuire, general secretary of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners and a co-founder of the American Federation of Labor. Later research points to Matthew Maguire, a machinist who was secretary of New York's Central Labor Union in 1882.
What's open and closed
- Federal offices, Federal Reserve Banks and post offices are closed; there is no regular mail delivery.
- The New York Stock Exchange is closed, and SIFMA recommends a full bond-market close.
