History of Father's Day
Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington, conceived the idea in 1909 while listening to a Mother's Day sermon at Spokane's Central Methodist Church. Her father, William Jackson Smart, had raised the family's six children alone after her mother died in 1898.
With support from the Spokane Ministerial Alliance and the local YMCA, Spokane held the first Father's Day on June 19, 1910; churchgoers wore roses to honor their fathers. The idea spread nationally over the following years, with informal support from Presidents Woodrow Wilson and Calvin Coolidge.
In 1966 President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the first presidential proclamation naming the third Sunday in June as Father's Day. On April 24, 1972, President Richard Nixon signed Public Law 92-278, making the observance permanent.

- 36 U.S.C. § 109: "The third Sunday in June is Father's Day." The President is asked to issue a yearly proclamation calling on government officials to display the flag on government buildings and inviting state and local governments and the public to observe the day with ceremonies.
