Who was St. Valentine?
The day is named after Valentinus, an early Christian martyr venerated on February 14. Sources describe more than one saint of that name, and few facts about them are reliable.
From Chaucer to paper cards
The earliest known text linking St. Valentine's Day with romantic love is Geoffrey Chaucer's poem Parlement of Foules (around 1381–82), in which birds choose their mates on “Seynt Valentynes day”. A rondeau by Charles, Duke of Orléans, written while he was a prisoner in England after the Battle of Agincourt (1415), is often called the oldest surviving valentine.
In the United States, Esther Howland of Worcester, Massachusetts, began making and selling lace-paper valentines in the late 1840s and became known as the “Mother of the American Valentine”.
When Valentine's Day meets Ash Wednesday
When Easter falls on April 1 (March 31 in a leap year), Ash Wednesday falls on February 14. This happened in 2018 and 2024 and happens next in 2029. Catholics aged 18 to 59 then keep the Ash Wednesday fast on Valentine's Day.
