Eclipses in 2031
2031 has 2 solar and 3 lunar eclipses. Solar eclipses happen only at new moon and lunar eclipses only at full moon. A lunar eclipse can be seen from anywhere the Moon is above the horizon; a total or annular solar eclipse only from a narrow path, with a partial eclipse around it. A penumbral lunar eclipse only slightly dims the Moon and is easy to miss.
| Date (ET) | Eclipse | Greatest eclipse | Visible from |
|---|---|---|---|
| Penumbral lunar eclipse (Flower Moon) | 11:51 PM EDT (03:51 UTC) | Americas, Europe, Africa | |
| Annular solar eclipse | 3:15 AM EDT (07:15 UTC) | Africa, southern Asia, East Indies, Australia; annular in Angola, Congo, Zambia, Tanzania, southern India, Malaysia and Indonesia | |
| Penumbral lunar eclipse (Strawberry Moon) | 7:44 AM EDT (11:44 UTC) | East Indies, Australia, Pacific | |
| Penumbral lunar eclipse (Hunter's Moon) | 3:45 AM EDT (07:45 UTC) | Americas | |
| Hybrid solar eclipse | 4:06 PM EST (21:06 UTC) | Pacific, southern US, Central America, northwest South America; hybrid over the Pacific and Panama |

Time zones: full moons in Pacific Time and UTC
All times on this page are US Eastern Time (EST in winter, EDT from the second Sunday of March to the first Sunday of November). A moon phase happens at the same instant everywhere on Earth, but the clock time and sometimes the date depend on your time zone: a phase shortly before midnight Eastern is already the next day in UTC and in Europe, and one shortly after midnight is still the previous evening on the US West Coast. Blue moons depend on the time zone for the same reason.
In 2031, these 3 full moons fall on a different date in UTC than in Eastern Time: Worm Moon (Mar 8 ET, Mar 9 UTC); Flower Moon (May 6 ET, May 7 UTC); Sturgeon Moon (Aug 2 ET, Aug 3 UTC).

Full moon names explained
The full moon names used here are folk names from North America. The Old Farmer's Almanac, which popularized them, traces them to Native American (largely Algonquian), colonial American and European traditions; different Native American nations used different names. Each name is tied to the calendar month in which the full moon falls, except for three special cases:
- Harvest Moon is the full moon closest to the September equinox. It usually falls in September; when it falls in October, the September full moon is called the Corn Moon.
- Hunter's Moon is the full moon after the Harvest Moon.
- Blue moon here means the second full moon in one calendar month. An older rule from the Maine Farmers' Almanac calls the third full moon of an astronomical season that has four a blue moon (a seasonal blue moon); the calendar-month meaning spread after a 1946 Sky & Telescope article.
What the names of the 2031 full moons mean:
- Wolf Moon: Wolves were heard howling more often in midwinter.
- Snow Moon: February is often the snowiest month in North America.
- Worm Moon: Earthworms reappear as the soil thaws and warms.
- Pink Moon: Moss pink (creeping phlox), an early spring wildflower, comes into bloom.
- Flower Moon: Flowers bloom in abundance.
- Strawberry Moon: Wild strawberries ripen and are ready to gather.
- Buck Moon: The antlers of male deer (bucks) are in full growth.
- Sturgeon Moon: Lake sturgeon were most easily caught in late summer.
- Corn Moon: Corn is ready to harvest.
- Harvest Moon: The full moon closest to the September equinox; around it the Moon rises soon after sunset for several evenings in a row, extending light for harvest work.
- Hunter's Moon: Game animals have fattened for winter, the season for hunting and storing food.
- Beaver Moon: Beavers finish their winter preparations and retreat into their lodges.
- Cold Moon: Winter cold sets in and nights are at their longest.
Frequently asked questions
Why does 2031 have 13 full moons?
A lunar cycle averages 29.53 days, so 12 cycles take about 354 days, 11 days less than a calendar year. A year gets a 13th full moon only when its first full moon falls within about the first 11 days of January. In 2031 the first full moon comes early enough.
How many days are there between full moons in 2031?
The average is 29.53 days, but the gap varies because the Moon's orbit is elliptical. In 2031 the shortest gap between two full moons is 29 days 6 hours (Buck Moon to Sturgeon Moon) and the longest 29 days 18 hours (Wolf Moon to Snow Moon).
When is the next blue moon after 2031?
The next blue moon in the calendar-month sense after 2031 is on Monday, July 31, 2034. The next seasonal blue moon is on Friday, August 20, 2032.
