Eclipses in 2028
2028 has 2 solar and 3 lunar eclipses. Solar eclipses happen only at new moon and lunar eclipses only at full moon. A lunar eclipse can be seen from anywhere the Moon is above the horizon; a total or annular solar eclipse only from a narrow path, with a partial eclipse around it.
| Date (ET) | Eclipse | Greatest eclipse | Visible from |
|---|---|---|---|
| Partial lunar eclipse (Wolf Moon) | 11:13 PM EST (04:13 UTC) | Americas, Europe, Africa | |
| Annular solar eclipse | 10:08 AM EST (15:08 UTC) | Eastern North America, Central and South America, western Europe, northwest Africa; annular in Ecuador, Peru, Brazil, Suriname, Spain and Portugal | |
| Partial lunar eclipse (Buck Moon) | 2:20 PM EDT (18:20 UTC) | Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia | |
| Total solar eclipse | 10:55 PM EDT (02:55 UTC) | Southeast Asia, East Indies, Australia, New Zealand; total in Australia and New Zealand | |
| Total lunar eclipse (Blue Moon) | 11:52 AM EST (16:52 UTC) | Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia, Pacific |

Time zones: full moons in Pacific Time and UTC
All times on this page are US Eastern Time (EST in winter, EDT from the second Sunday of March to the first Sunday of November). A moon phase happens at the same instant everywhere on Earth, but the clock time and sometimes the date depend on your time zone: a phase shortly before midnight Eastern is already the next day in UTC and in Europe, and one shortly after midnight is still the previous evening on the US West Coast. Blue moons depend on the time zone for the same reason.
In 2028, these 3 full moons fall on a different date in UTC than in Eastern Time: Wolf Moon (Jan 11 ET, Jan 12 UTC); Worm Moon (Mar 10 ET, Mar 11 UTC); Cold Moon (Dec 1 ET, Dec 2 UTC).

Full moon names explained
The full moon names used here are folk names from North America. The Old Farmer's Almanac, which popularized them, traces them to Native American (largely Algonquian), colonial American and European traditions; different Native American nations used different names. Each name is tied to the calendar month in which the full moon falls, except for three special cases:
- Harvest Moon is the full moon closest to the September equinox. It usually falls in September; when it falls in October, the September full moon is called the Corn Moon.
- Hunter's Moon is the full moon after the Harvest Moon.
- Blue moon here means the second full moon in one calendar month. An older rule from the Maine Farmers' Almanac calls the third full moon of an astronomical season that has four a blue moon (a seasonal blue moon); the calendar-month meaning spread after a 1946 Sky & Telescope article.
What the names of the 2028 full moons mean:
- Wolf Moon: Wolves were heard howling more often in midwinter.
- Snow Moon: February is often the snowiest month in North America.
- Worm Moon: Earthworms reappear as the soil thaws and warms.
- Pink Moon: Moss pink (creeping phlox), an early spring wildflower, comes into bloom.
- Flower Moon: Flowers bloom in abundance.
- Strawberry Moon: Wild strawberries ripen and are ready to gather.
- Buck Moon: The antlers of male deer (bucks) are in full growth.
- Sturgeon Moon: Lake sturgeon were most easily caught in late summer.
- Corn Moon: Corn is ready to harvest.
- Harvest Moon: The full moon closest to the September equinox; around it the Moon rises soon after sunset for several evenings in a row, extending light for harvest work.
- Hunter's Moon: Game animals have fattened for winter, the season for hunting and storing food.
- Cold Moon: Winter cold sets in and nights are at their longest.
- Blue Moon: The second full moon in one calendar month.
Frequently asked questions
Why does 2028 have 13 full moons?
A lunar cycle averages 29.53 days, so 12 cycles take about 354 days, 11 days less than a calendar year. A year gets a 13th full moon only when its first full moon falls within about the first 11 days of January. In 2028 the first full moon comes early enough.
How many days are there between full moons in 2028?
The average is 29.53 days, but the gap varies because the Moon's orbit is elliptical. In 2028 the shortest gap between two full moons is 29 days 9 hours (Worm Moon to Pink Moon) and the longest 29 days 16 hours (Harvest Moon to Hunter's Moon).
When is the next blue moon after 2028?
The next blue moon in the calendar-month sense after 2028 is on Tuesday, September 30, 2031. The next seasonal blue moon is on Thursday, August 23, 2029.
