History of Columbus Day
A joint resolution of Congress approved on April 30, 1934 asked the President to proclaim October 12 of each year as Columbus Day.
The Uniform Monday Holiday Act (Public Law 90-363, June 28, 1968) made Columbus Day a legal public holiday on the second Monday in October, starting in 1971. Federal law (36 U.S.C. § 107) still asks the President to issue a Columbus Day proclamation each year.
Indigenous Peoples' Day
- 1992: Berkeley, California, became the first city to adopt Indigenous Peoples' Day, during the 500th anniversary of Columbus's voyage.
- 2021: President Joe Biden issued the first presidential proclamation of Indigenous Peoples' Day (Proclamation 10283, October 8, 2021), alongside a Columbus Day proclamation, and repeated it each year through 2024.
- 2025: President Donald Trump's Proclamation 10980 proclaimed Columbus Day only.
